The Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state that is situated at the western
edge of the former Soviet Union, sandwiched between Romania and the Ukraine.
The largest part of the country lies between two rivers, the Prut-river
and the Dniester-river, with a long and narrow strip of land, Transnistria
to the east of the Dniester-river.
With a land area of 33,700 square kilometers, Moldova is home for 4,5
million people. Moldova annually experiences four distinct seasons, including
relatively mild winters and warm summers. The average temperatures are
23 C in July and “minus” 4 C in January. Historians believe the ancestors
of Moldavians to be the Thracian tribes of the Dacians. One of the most
successful epochs in the history of independent Moldova has been in the
reign of Stefan cel Mare (Stefan the Great, 1457-1504). During these years,
Moldova won important victories over the Turks, the Tatars, the Polish
and other invaders. In 1991 the Moldovan Supreme Soviet (parliament) declared
the state independence of Republic of Moldova. After Moldova had adopted
the democratic Constitution in summer 1994, the republic made an impressive
breakthrough into the international arena. The national currency of Moldova
is Moldavian Lei. In the republic the foreign currency can be easily exchanged
to local as in special points so in the every commercial bank.. |
