MOLDOVA'S HISTORICAL MONUMENTS

The Time persistently sent the Riders of destruction against those Temples and houses raised up by sacred hands. In the whirlwinds of those devastations the creations had completely disappeared: cloisters and churches - the witnesses of so many historical events; manuscripts and paintings which had been created in trembling candle light; the colors on walls and icons had been erased, and tombstones had been broken; and even impregnable fortresses had been razes to the ground. Being built in those hard times on the Dniester banks, the fortresses served to defend the boundaries menaced by uninvited guests. The Hotin-fortress is one of the most beautiful and the most important fortresses on Moldavian land. The workmen of Alexander the Kind have built that fortress at the beginning of the 15-th century. The Soroca-fortress is on guard downward from the Hotin, splendours its splendor in the water of the Dniester-river. From there in 1711 both the Moldavian and Russian armies led by Voivode Dmitrie Kantemir and by Tzar Peter the Great went against the Turkish army. Over this plot of Moldavian land, the cavalries rolled out like unbridled winds, disturbing the calmness of souls, and profaning natural beauty… But the men built secret dwellings again and again. So appeared cliff cloisters like those in Old Orkhei, Saharna, Tzypovo…
