Festivals and Carnivals


From the earliest times carnival was celebrated 40 days before the Holy Week and marked the so cold boundary after which the Lent started.

But the first origins of carnivals lie in the pagan ceremonies dedicated to the ancient Egyptian God Osiris and in the Roman Saturnalia.

When the Cristianity came to substitute the Paganism, most of the traditions and holidays were prohibitted. Carnival was not an exception. But the centuries have passed and arrived the epoch of Renaissance which brought a real holiday that made people forget about their status and which caused new rules and orders.

Later, the Europeans settled all around the world and brought carnival to almost all the continents of the planet. Local inhabitants accepted this tradition with pleasure. Carnival in Rio, GOA, Basel and Nice - all of them have their special atmosphere and local color.
